American Vegan Society Founder Jay Dinshah is honored as a “Hometown Revolutionary” in a new semiquincentennial exhibit by the Harrison Township Historical Society of Gloucester County NJ. The exhibit explores “the contributions to life, liberty and happiness by Gloucester Countians from 1776 to the present day and how their achievements continue to challenge and inspire.” Dinshah is specifically heralded for establishing the national nonprofit organization American Vegan Society. Gloucester County is part of the Greater Philadelphia region.

Dinshah first went vegan by visiting Cross Brothers slaughterhouse in Philadelphia where he declared his veganism on the spot. He was a lifelong resident of Malaga in Gloucester County NJ.

The exhibit honors, “a diverse group of people in science, business, health, civil rights and reform, arts and athletics,” some of whom “have become legendary.” All have deep ties to Gloucester County. Dinshah’s fellow honorees range from the household-name punk musician Patti Smith to less-famous achievers such as Dorcas Reilly, the inventor of Green Bean Casserole.

The exhibition opened on April 11th and continues weekends through June 13 at Old Town Hall Museum, 64 S. Main St. in Mullica Hill NJ. Free admission. More info is available at harrisonhistorical.com.
