American Vegan Center
A 76-minute* walking tour through Old City focusing on its vegetarian and vegan history, led by Vance Lehmkuhl. Attendees will see historic spots (most, unfortunately, lacking historical markers) tied to vegetarian pioneers such as Benjamin Lay, Ben Franklin, the Grimke sisters, Sylvester Graham, Bronson Alcott, Caroline Earle White, Peace Pilgrim, and Alfoncie Austin. Vegetarian advocacy officially launched in the U.S. in 1817 just one block from the American Vegan Center, and the story of that group along with others illustrates Philadelphia’s groundbreaking role in American veg history.
The tour departs from the steps of the American Vegan Center at 17 N. 2nd Street at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 16th. All attendees are entitled to a 10% discount on any food items purchased at the American Vegan Center on this day.
This tour and its discount rate is for members of the Center City Vegans Meetup group. Welcome!
*Depending on logistical and traffic issues, tour may take up to 88 minutes.
