NFTGA Members’ Veg History Walking Tour

Event Date:

January 31, 2025

Event Time:

3:00 pm

Event Location:

American Vegan Center

NFTGA Conference attendees have several options to sample the 90-minute veg history walking tour at the American Vegan Center, truly one of the “hidden gems” of Philly tourism.

Four tour times (see “Event schedule details” at bottom right) are offered on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday after the conference. Conference attendees unable to attend any of those slots can pay a $2 processing fee to reserve a rain check for any AVC-scheduled tour in 2025, so anyone who may wind up back in Philly by that point may want to reserve a spot. This action must be taken by March 1st.

About the tour itself: A tour through Old City focusing on its vegetarian and vegan history, led by Vance Lehmkuhl. Attendees will visit historic locations tied to vegetarian pioneers such as Benjamin Lay, Ben Franklin, the Grimke sisters, Sylvester Graham, Bronson Alcott, Caroline Earle White, Peace Pilgrim, and Alfoncie Austin. Vegetarian advocacy officially launched in the U.S. in 1817 just one block from the American Vegan Center, and the story of that group along with others illustrates Philadelphia’s groundbreaking role in American veg history.

The tour departs from the steps of the American Vegan Center at 17 N. 2nd Street. Total walking distance is approximately 1.3 miles.
