As so-called “turkey day” approaches, come celebrate the lives of turkeys with us and contribute your unique artwork to the “46 Million Turkeys Project.” We’ll have color pencils, pens, markers and crayons, photos of turkeys as reference material, and plenty of paper for your turkey portrait. Selected turkey portraits from the vast collection will be on display. No previous art skill required! Vegans and non-vegans are welcome. Your turkey picture could be part of the largest collection of turkey art ever assembled!
Cheryl Miller will oversee the drawing project and provide tips and encouragement as participants of all ages capture turkeys on paper.
What is this about? Cheryl attended a Farm Sanctuary “Celebration for the Turkeys” in November 1998. The experience affirmed what she profoundly understood to be true—an animal’s life matters. Since that day and continuing for the past 24 years, Ms. Miller has painted a portrait of a turkey on Thanksgiving Day to celebrate and pay tribute to these sweet and gentle animals. In 2013, she initiated this participatory art project with the goal of creating a portrait to represent and “put a face on” every turkey (46 million birds) eaten on a single Thanksgiving Day.
