American Vegan Center
NOTE: This Saturday tour is a special edition, including mention of the Marquis de Lafayette connected with one of our main tour subjects, in conjunction with the Fete Lafayette. AVC tour staff will be at that event at noon, so the tour will be offered that day at 4:00 pm instead.
A 90-minute walking tour through Old City focusing on its vegetarian and vegan history, led by Vance Lehmkuhl. Attendees will visit historic locations tied to vegetarian pioneers such as Benjamin Lay, Ben Franklin, the Grimke sisters, Sylvester Graham, Bronson Alcott, Caroline Earle White, Peace Pilgrim, and Alfoncie Austin. Vegetarian advocacy officially launched in the U.S. in 1817 just one block from the American Vegan Center, and the story of that group along with others illustrates Philadelphia’s groundbreaking role in American veg history.
The tour departs from the steps of the American Vegan Center at 17 N. 2nd Street at 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 28t.
