Corporate Matching Program

By Mark C. Shepard

I worked for a company that supports the local communities where their employees and customers live and work. In addition to supporting local charities and nonprofit organizations, they encourage employees to do the same.

I learned that one of the company’s benefits was a matching gift program. Through this program, they offer dollar-for-dollar matching gifts. The company will match eligible donations made to approved nonprofit organizations up to a certain amount.

I was able to donate to the American Vegan Society (AVS) and AVS received a matching gift from my employer. It was simply a matter of obtaining and completing a company form, which I mailed in with my donation. AVS is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization EIN #226058533, but I wanted to know if my request for a matching gift would be approved. I received a confirmation email that my company had matched my donation.

I encourage AVS members to check with their employers to see if a matching gift program is one of their company benefits when donating. We all give when we can, and it’s helpful to know that this type of program can encourage us to make more charitable contributions.
