American Vegan Center
A 90-minute walking tour through Old City focusing on its vegetarian and vegan history, led by Vance Lehmkuhl. Attendees will visit historic locations tied to vegetarian pioneers such as Benjamin Lay, Ben Franklin, the Grimke sisters, Sylvester Graham, Bronson Alcott, Caroline Earle White, Peace Pilgrim, and Alfoncie Austin. Vegetarian advocacy officially launched in the U.S. in 1817 just one block from the American Vegan Center, and the story of that group along with others illustrates Philadelphia’s groundbreaking role in American veg history.
This special-edition tour, which will only be offered on July 4 and July 6, will cover those points while highlighting the ways veg activist contributed to the break from Great Britain and the creation of the United States in 1776.
The tour departs from the steps of the American Vegan Center at 17 N. 2nd Street at 1:30 pm on Thursday, July 4.
Students and those facing financial hardship are welcome to select the “Student” price.
