A 76-minute walking tour through Old City focusing on its vegetarian and vegan history, led by Vance Lehmkuhl. Attendees will see historic spots tied to stories of vegetarian pioneers such as Benjamin Lay, Ben Franklin, the Grimke sisters, Sylvester Graham, Bronson Alcott, Caroline Earle White, and Alfoncie Austin. Vegetarian advocacy officially launched in the U.S. in 1817 just one block from the American Vegan Center, and the story of that group along with others illustrates Philadelphia’s groundbreaking role in American veg history.
The tour, for one to four people, departs from the steps of the American Vegan Center at 17 N. 2nd Street at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 16th.
